Adapted from IOAA 2009 (Tehran), theory problem 16. We have restated it in our own words and kept the original data. The solution was last checked on 21 October 2026.
A projectile leaves Earth's surface at sea level with speed
(a) Show that the path is an ellipse with semi-major axis
(b) What is the greatest height of the projectile above the surface, in Earth radii?
(c) What is its range, the distance along the surface from launch to landing, in Earth radii?
(d) What is the eccentricity of the ellipse?
(e) How long is the projectile in flight?
- By (3.5),
, so and . The energy is negative, so the path is an ellipse. - The angular momentum of each kilogram is
, so by (3.8), . With , and . - The highest point is the apocentre,
from Earth's centre, which is above the surface. - At launch,
, so by (3.7), and the true anomaly is 120°, climbing towards the apocentre at 180°. The landing is at 240°, so the projectile goes 120° round Earth's centre, a range of , about 13 340 km. - At
, , so and . By symmetry the landing is at , so the flight covers . - The mean anomaly grows at
, so the time of flight is . For Earth s, so the flight takes 3336 s.
Answer(a)
This problem also appears among the olympiad problems of Section 3.4, Where a body is on its orbit, which teaches the ideas it uses. Equation and figure numbers refer to the course.
