Adapted from IOAA 2011 (Katowice), theory problem 4. We have restated it in our own words and kept the original data. The solution was last checked on 21 October 2026.
Assume that Phobos moves round Mars on a circular orbit in Mars's equatorial plane. For how long is Phobos above the horizon for an observer on Mars's equator? Mars has radius
Phobos and Mars both turn the same way. Work with the angular speed of Phobos relative to the turning planet.
- Mars turns at
rad/s. By (S.19), Phobos goes round at rad/s, once every 7.66 hours. - Relative to the observer, Phobos moves at
rad/s, in the direction of the rotation, so it rises in the west. - The horizon cuts Phobos's orbit at an angle
on either side of the observer's meridian, with , so . Phobos is up while it covers rad relative to the observer. - The time above the horizon is
, about 15 300 s.
AnswerPhobos stays above the horizon for about 4.25 hours, and rises again about 11.1 hours after it last rose.
This problem also appears among the olympiad problems of Section 3.11, Problems for Chapter 3, which teaches the ideas it uses. Equation and figure numbers refer to the course.
