Adapted from IOAA 2024 (Rio de Janeiro), theory problem T8. We have restated it in our own words and kept the original data. The solution was last checked on 23 October 2026.
Two black holes, each of mass
(a) Treating the pair as one mass
(b) Near the pair the star feels mainly one black hole. Suppose it meets that black hole head on, with its own speed small next to the orbital speed of the black hole, and leaves along the line it came in on. Energy and momentum are conserved, and the meeting is much shorter than the period of the orbit. Find the speed
(c) The pair moves through the field at speed
where
- (a) At the closest point the star moves across the line to the centre, so angular momentum gives
. Energy gives (3.4). With , since is much less than . - (b) Each black hole moves at
round the centre at distance , so and . In the frame of the black hole the star comes in at speed and, with energy conserved and a black hole much heavier than the star, leaves at speed in the opposite direction. Back in the frame of the centre this is , as for a gravity assist (Section 3.6), so - (c) Each star gains the kinetic energy
, since is much less than . - In a time
the pair meets the stars in a tube of length whose end is a ring of radii and . The ring has area , so the stars are met at the rate using from (a). - The orbit loses energy at the rate
. Its energy is , so . Setting this equal to minus the rate of loss gives
Answer(a)
This problem also appears among the olympiad problems of Section 8.9, Problems for Chapter 8, which teaches the ideas it uses. Equation and figure numbers refer to the course.
